Everything You Need to Know About CASAI

The idea behind “MHS” was already born in 2015 within Diagona. MHS was our working name until the end of 2018, when we filed a trademark application for the name CASAI.

CASAI stands for Communication, Assistance, Structure and Artificial Intelligence.

During my years as a quantity measurement and valuation specialist over the past decade, I have worked on varied and engaging assignments in mixed roles. I have sat on the Contractor’s side and settled quantities against the Client. I have worked on Client assignments and checked the Contractor’s interim measurement submissions. I have sat with the Subcontractor and settled against the Contractor, who then settled further against the Client.

Through that experience I gained a full picture of why the quantity measurement and valuation process can become so hard to manage.

• Over the years I have met clients who were genuinely worried about the quantity measurement and valuation part of their assignments. In many cases it was simply a source of stress.
• I also know of contractors that went bankrupt because they lacked sufficient control and structure in the quantity measurement and valuation process.
• Things often become messy when project members work in different Excel versions and email files back and forth. Sometimes someone forgets to copy a party, and so on.
• Expectations for how evidence should be reported, and against which BoQ codes, were never clearly communicated.
• Missing traceability around communication and supporting evidence.

From those experiences, the idea of a platform that could solve the problems above was born.

I therefore designed CASAI together with a group of specialists within Diagona AB and industry experts from both Client and Contractor organisations.

Through that project group we developed a product intended to address the difficulties in quantity measurement and valuation.

We have built a cloud application that goes well beyond what the market typically offers for this process today.

We designed the system workflows to minimise the time from a submitted code or measurement sheet to an approved code or measurement sheet. With CASAI you do not need to wait until an entire interim measurement submission is fully calculated before sending it to the other party for approval. Calculation and review happen continuously.

When enough codes have been reviewed, you close the submission and issue the invoice. If some codes are still awaiting review, you can choose to put them on account, remove them, or move them to the next submission.

A steady, efficient workflow creates better liquidity for the parties on the project.

If you sit in a review role for a larger Client, you typically receive supporting documentation from several projects at the end of the month or the beginning of the next. With a system like CASAI that enables continuous review, your working environment, your results and your workload improve.

Because CASAI offers integrated communication between the parties, unnecessary email chains are avoided and the risk that important communication is lost or misdirected is removed.

Because workflows can look slightly different depending on who works in the system, we designed three usage models with somewhat different flows.

We have built extensive export functionality so that all data from CASAI (evidence, communication history, BoQ changes and more) can be exported, together with a summary document in Excel format following traditional layouts used on larger infrastructure projects.

We work on innovation and digitisation in the industry together with Svensk Byggtjänst. That is why we can offer functionality that retrieves AMA/MER/MOTIV literature directly from Svensk Byggtjänst’s website and presents it in our application, linked to the right code and AMA version. AMA is Sweden’s technical specification system; MER are the linked measurement and payment rules; MOTIV is the guidance commentary. At present an AMA Online account is required to integrate CASAI and Svensk Byggtjänst.

The purpose of CASAI is to create a better climate on projects when it comes to quantity measurement and valuation. We want to give the parties better control and structure. We want to improve cash flow for the parties on projects. Managing the commercial settlement process should become more efficient and more enjoyable.
